Bay Of Naples - Not All Hot Air (part 2)!
Although the area’s past history is unmissable (see part 1), there is plenty to admire today about this famous area of Italy.
Capri is a must. If you go during July and August the island is overrun with tourists. There are many ferries running from the various ports on the main land. Capri’s port is very busy but you can escape the bedlam by heading for Anacapri by bus or taxi. Anacapri has splendid shops and restaurants but do take the chair lift to the summit. You can admire the panoramic view from the cafe on the summit. Of course, Capri town is a must see! The chic shops and a glimpse of a celeb is on offer. Be warned the town is extremely busy - only after the ferries have left can you really enjoy the town. Although a boat trip around the island is pleasant, the Blue Grotto is overrated.

For some people, the perfect holiday might be summarized as follows: arrive at the airport, check into a luxury hotel, spend the rest of the time at the pool or the beach with the latest bestseller. That may be a good way to unwind and indulge in a bit of unstructured, do-nothing time, but it has always seemed to me to be a bit of a waste, especially when you are a foreign country. Not that I am advocating racing around museums or culturally worthy sights, especially when the weather is hot and you are faced with queues and cross children, but maybe there is a way to have the best of both worlds.
